Jim, a brave chap, bought one and has been posting about the experience of roadtripping the #fuckingcarofthefuture across Europe back to Northern Ireland. Much to the displeasure of Wolfsburg as it turns out.

Taking it on a ferry is Verboten, which is a bit of a problem when getting to Northern Ireland. Also, it needs servicing every 3000km. This would have meant crossing the country to Milton Keynes, but now the solution is to have a local dealer do it with HQ supervising over Skype...

Honestly, don’t care about the issues, I still want one desperately.

I think those things are amazing and I want to live in my cyberpunk dsytopian future now, damnit!

is this like the EV1 where it was meant to be scrapped and not fall into private hands or sometihng?

It’s got Tesla style remote monitoring and as  it turns out VW keep quite a keen eye with what owners are doing. Apparently it can’t go on an open ferry because of potential damage to the hybrid system- I guess from Sea Spray.

I wonder how hard it would be to build a replica using a tube chassis and a Volt or Leaf battery pack.

They look great, but it does appear to be a semi prototype affair. I think dieselgate killed the further development it needed.

Chassis and proportions? Easy.

Getting actual CF that looks like that? Not cheap.

If VW was really committed to this green initiative, they’d release the technical drawings for other companies to make, or spin off a sub sidiary that sells these as rolling bucks and buyers supply their own powertrain.

Sound theory. Even making these all electric would be fine. I’d wet myself if I could drive one, even if it only had electrons to power it and a range of ~100 miles.

It’s a shame they limited the sales of these to just 250 units.   I’m sure they could have sold at least 10X as many just for novelty reasons alone.

I’m thinking fiberglass instead of CF.  It’d definitely be heavier, but a heck of a lot cheaper.  Either that, and go all-out and do a hand-hammered/formed aluminum skin.

It’s being developed by a company fairly local to me. They’re rolling out a beta testing program so hopefully I’ll get a better look at one at some point.
